Treatment For Trauma Syndromes
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is the classic trauma syndrome and is technically an anxiety disorder. However, Dr. Gross believes that the spectrum of traumatic disorders deserves a separate section because of their special nature and ubiquitousness. Trauma spectrum disorders is a more appropriate term due to the very limiting criteria that PTSD currently utilizes. Sadly, trauma syndromes are more common than previously believed. It is Dr. Gross' belief that many primary psychiatric disorders like substance abuse, eating disorders, depressive and anxiety disorders may have trauma at their core.
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms include:
- Flashbacks, bad dreams, or alarming thoughts, as well as the physical sensations they are remembering. Re-experiencing symptoms of the trauma can be brought on by situations, words, or objects that remind the victim of the trauma
- Feeling emotionally numb or, conversely, feeling guilty, worried, or depressed
- Avoiding anything that reminds them of the dangerous event
- Being easily upset, feeling “on edge”, having trouble sleeping, or having angry outbursts.
Treatment generally requires a combination of pharmacotherapy and specialized psychotherapy.
